BUMBLE BEE has winning form over course-and-distance and, on that piece of form, sets the standard. Ben Haslam’s filly hasn’t been seen since October but is handed the vote to land this uncompetitive opener.
MOPS GEM finished a creditable fourth at this course six days ago and should go well under Luke Morris for her bang in-form stable.
Verdict: BUMBLE BEE, MOPS GEM
17.10 – Betway Handicap
MY GIRL MAGGIE arrives in rude health and has developed a liking for this track having won twice at the track and finished second last time out. Mark Johnston’s four-year-old is difficult to oppose in her bid for a third course success under the in-form Richard Kingscote.
Incidentally, COMBINE is another course winner and can be expected to get competitive under Tom Marquand with room for improvement from her current mark.
Verdict: MY GIRL MAGGIE, COMBINE
17.40 – Betway Selling Handicap
John Quinn’s INDIAN PURSUIT has found his niche this season under positive tactics. He might be challenged for the lead by another pace-setter in the shape of Drakefell but has enough early-gate speed to grab a prominent position and go close under regular pilot Jason Hart.
SLOWMO has been in good form on Southwell’s fibresand but has adapted to this surface in the past and can make his presence felt from a handy inside draw.
Verdict: INDIAN PURSUIT, SLOWMO
18.10 – Bombardier Novice Stakes
Realistically, there’s only a couple of these you can have on your shortlist.
Firstly, REPERTOIRE is undoubtedly the class act in the field and, in addition, put in some Sterling efforts in defeat when trained in France. Given his official rating of 96 he should take plenty of beating under Jamie Spencer, who has his only ride on the card.
MOONBOOTZ showed fair form when runner-up here on his first couple of starts. He does, however, have plenty to find on ratings with the firstly-named, but looks the main danger back over seven-furlongs.
Verdict: REPERTOIRE, MOONBOOTZ
18.40 – Bombardier British-Hopped Amber Beer Handicap
CRITICAL THINKING has been a grand servant for connections at this track, being a six-time C&D winner. He bagged four wins last year and was a creditable second five days ago. If staging a repeat here, he will take some beating.
MAURICE DANCER was unable to muster any sort of challenge earlier this month over C&D but has often gone well at this track. He is drawn handily in stall 1 and holds solid each-way credentials.
Verdict: CRITICAL THINKING, MAURICE DANCER
The top-weight STAY CLASSY looks very well-treated on historical form and has often held her form well at this level. Richard Spencer’s mare has plenty of useful form at this course and, being only 2Ib above her last winning mark, the five-year-old looks a leading player.
Of the rest, RED POPPY was an excellent third over C&D when last seen at a similar level and the addition of cheek-pieces should prove beneficial. She merits consideration.
Verdict: STAY CLASSY, RED POPPY
