The Grade 2, $200,000 Davona Dale Stakes will run as Race 12 on the Feb. 27 card at Gulfstream Park.
The event for 3-year-old fillies will cover one mile and include names like Vequist, Curlin’s Catch, and Millefeuille among the field of 12.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the Davona Dale Stakes:
Betting Preview: Vequist, Curlin’s Catch
The leading runner among the sizable field is Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Swilcan Stable’s Vequist. The Nyquist filly is trained by Robert Reid, Jr.
She has a career record of 2-2-0 from four starts and earnings of $1,235,500.
Last time out, she won the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland, registering a 99 Speed Figure. The filly’s other 2020 performances include a runner-up effort in the Oct. 10 Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, first in the Sept. 6 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, and second in a July 29 maiden special weight race at Parx Racing.
Vequist will break from post 3 under jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.
Her biggest challenge will likely come from Breeze Easy’s Curlin’s Catch. The Curlin filly is trained by Mark Casse.
She is 2-1-0 from four career starts with earnings of $103,454. In 2021, she is a perfect two-for-two.
The filly’s most recent run was a victory in the Feb. 6 Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, which followed a Jan. 3 maiden special weight victory at Gulfstream Park. To close out her 2020 campaign, she finished fifth in the Oct. 31 Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Black Type) at Woodbine.
Curlin’s Catch will break from post 4 under rider Jose Ortiz.
Betting Preview: Millefeuille
Another top entrant coming into the race is Juddmonte Farms’ Millefeuille. Also, a Curlin filly, she has a career record of 1-2-0 from three starts, and she will be making her first start of the year.
Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the filly finished second in the Dec. 5 Demoiselle Stakes (G2) to close out 2020 at Aqueduct Racetrack. Prior to that, she scored an Oct. 23 maiden special weight race and finished second in another on Sept. 26 at Belmont Park.
Millefeuille will break from post 5 under rider John Velazquez.
The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Wholebodemeister (post 1, E. J. Zayas); Lady Traveler (post 2, K. Carmouche); Crazy Beautiful (post 6, R. Albarado); Competitive Speed (post 7, L. Reyes); Adios Trippi (post 8, C. J. Lanerie); Hindsight (post 9, T. Gaffalione); Happy Constitution (post 10, J. Alvarado); Pens Street (post 11, M. A. Vasquez); and Three Tipsy Chic (post 12, J. R. Leparoux).
Free Betting Pick
The one to beat in the Davona Dale is Vequist, 2020’s champion 2-year-old filly. She will look to kick off her sophomore campaign with a big performance against 11 rivals. Coming in as the 7-5 favorite, she will cut back in distance, and she has been breezing consistently since mid-January.
