The Boston Celtics get a shot at redemption against the Detroit Pistons following their New Year’s Day loss (96-93). This was the short handed Pistons first win of the season moving them to (1-4) as the Celtics fell to (3-3). The Celtics blamed a lack of energy for their slow start playing their third game in just four nights.
Detroit Pistons Preview: They’ll sneak some wins in like this
If you watch basketball or follow any of the NBA, you know that the Detroit Pistons are a very young and upcoming team and are in the start of a rebuild. This did not stop them from kicking off 2021 in an exciting way. Detroit picked up their first win against the Boston Celtics. In the meeting on New Year’s day, the Pistons came out throwing punches from the tip.
Detroit was without starting forward Blake Griffin who is in the NBA’s concussion protocol, but this didn’t’ stop the Pistons from coming out and firing on all cylinders. Their movement on the offensive end of the ball, overall team shooting, and defensive effort were on point from start to finish.
The Pistons have a surge of young talent which was on full display in this last game as rookie forward Saddiq Bey was (5-8) from three and hit a clutch free throw in the closing. He finished with 17 points. Head coach Dwayne Casey praised young big man Isaiah Stewart for the energy he provided off the bench. Killian Hayes, Pistons rookie point guard did not register a point but had 6 assists and 1 rebound in 23 minutes of action.
This team is young and is playing for a chance at a top 5 pick in next season’s draft. They will sneak a win or two in like this throughout the year, but if they are hoping to pull another upset over Boston it’s going to take a collective effort again.
Boston Celtics Preview: Celtics struggling early on
When these teams met on New Year’s Day there was no questioning it was a bad loss for the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are considered to be a contender in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics were awful at the start of this game and bad to finish this game as they went to the final 4:15 without a bucket. However, his team looked like the contender many expected in the 3rd quarter as they used a big run to claw their way back into it, but it’s safe to say they did not come ready to play.
The Celtics fell to 3-3 on the season and 7th in the Eastern Conference. Their young stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are not at fault for the early season struggles. Their bench has not been very good as a whole, and the line up with Daniel Theis and Tristian Thompson is not working out well. Per NBA stats, when starting the two bigs, Boston has a 94.4 offensive rating and 113.7 defensive rating which are both extremely low for a team with so much talent.
The Celtics are missing their all-star point guard Kemba Walker, so when he finally returns he should really help this team, but it’s still not an excuse for the continued poor starts through six games.
Celtics vs Pistons Betting Pick & Odd Lines
Mybookie has the Celtics -7.5 road favorites. Brad Stevens will have his guys ready to go this time around in this second match up. The Celtics made some strides in their first meeting displaying that top four league defense from a season ago in the second half.
Defense is all about effort and if the Celtics want to be considered among the league’s best, Stevens needs to get his guys going. I expect some line up changes to take place given how bad the two big line up has been.
The Pistons are going to need another great team effort game to pull the upset at home once again. This team is playing for a lottery pick, but there will be these kinds of upset games just not this time around.
If they want to pull another upset, Jerami Grant will need the 24 points he had in the previous match up. Saddiq Bey played one of his best games in his young career and they will also need his hot shooting to come to life again. Celtics will be too much this time around for the Pistons.
