Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy are Top Betting Favorites for 2021 Farmers Insurance Open

Jon Rahm Rory Mcllroy Farmers Insurance Open

    • Jon Rahm (+700) and Rory McIlroy (+900) are the top two betting favorites to win this week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
    • Xander Schauffele, who missed the cut in four out of his last five appearances at this tournament, is third at +1200
    • Defending champion Marc Leishman is listed at +3300.

The second tournament of the PGA Tour’s West Coast swing is this week’s Farmers Insurance Open which will be held at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California for the 53rd year.

Like last week, the tournament will be played over the North and South courses. The first two rounds will be played on both courses before moving to the South for the final 36 holes. Both courses play as Par 72 with the South measuring 7,765 yards and the North being more manageable at 7,258 yards.

This year’s edition will be without a big name as 15-time major champion Tiger Woods is not in the field after undergoing another back surgery. But even with Woods out, this year’s field is stellar with 13 out of the Top 15 golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings opting to play.

Rahm and Rory as Betting Favorites

Oddsmakers have listed Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy as the top betting favorites to win the tournament, with Rahm slightly ahead of McIlroy in the latest oddsboard. According to online sportsbook SportsBetting.ag, Rahm is the +700 odds on favorite while McIlroy is currently pegged at +900 in the same sportsbook.

Both Rahm and McIlroy have impressive resumes at Torrey Pines. Rahm won this tournament in 2017 and was a T-5 in 2019. Last year, the world no. 2 was this tournament’s 54-hole leader before finishing as runner-up. Meanwhile, McIlroy finished T-5 here in 2019 and T-3 in 2020.

Rahm was also the favorite of Golf betting sites last week at the American Express PGA tournament in La Quinta but withdrew from the event after tweaking a muscle. He however said that his withdrawal was mostly precautionary and he expects to be 100% at Torrey Pines. McIlroy was in the Middle East last week where he led the ABu Dhabi HSBC Championship through 54 holes but ended up finishing third.

Surprising Schauffele

California native Xander Schauffele is a surprising third in the oddsboard at +1200. Schauffele opened his 2021 with a T5 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. But he didn’t pick up a victory in 2020 and has missed the cut in four out of his last five appearances at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Schauffele however, closed his 2020 season strong. He was 5th at the U.S. Open, 2nd in the CJ Cup, and then ended the year with back to back 17th place finishes at the ZoZo and Masters. Fourth in the oddsboard is Tony Finau who had a close call at La Quinta. Finau was tied for the lead at the American Express after 54 holes but finished the tournament fourth.

Sentry TOC winner Harry English is one of the most improved golfers in the last 12 months. English ended the previous season without a full card and was in a slump that saw him sink to no. 369 in the world. He did everything but win last year and with the expanded field at the TOC, he took advantage and won for the first time since 2013. English is 5th in the latest SportsBetting.ag oddsboard at +2200.

Leishman Tamed Torrey Pines

Marc Leishman tamed Torrey Pines last year and won the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open. But after ranking 15th in the world during the COVID-19 break, Leishman would get only one Top 20 finish in 15 starts since the resumption of the Tour. He missed six cuts during the period after missing just a total of three in his previous 29 starts.

However, Leishman seemed to get it back together since his T13 finish at the Masters in Augusta. He started 2021 with a T24 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and finished T-4 at the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago.

Now Leishman will try to keep the momentum going and repeat as champion. Three out of the last six winners of this tournament have been Australians and Leishman has the 10tn best odds to win again at +3300.
