Dustin Johnson Favored to Win 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions

Sentry Tournament Of Champions Dustin Johnson

  • The PGA Tour returns this week for the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
  • This year has a record field of 42 due to an expanded criteria of eligibility.
  • World number 1 Dustin Johnson is the betting favorite to win the event at +600.

The PGA Tour’s 2020-21 season resumes this week with the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Kapalua Resort Plantation course in Maui.

It is the first of 29 consecutive weeks of PGA Tour events through the Tokyo Olympics in July. This stretch follows 24 straight weeks of golf beginning with the Tour’s resumption at Colonial last June through Mayakoba last December.

Traditionally, and as the name implies, only tournament winners from the previous season are invited to the event. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic which disrupted the tour last year, this year’s edition looks a little different.

Largest Field Ever

The first PGA event of the calendar year is traditionally a winners-only field from the previous calendar year, but the criteria for eligibility was altered for the 2021 edition because of the tournaments lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, this year’s field now includes the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings who advanced to the 2020 Tour Championship.

Golfers who are in the field as a result of the expanded criteria include Abraham Ancer, Cameron Champ, Harris English, Tony Finau, Lanto Griffin, Billy Horschel, Mackenzie Hughes, Kevin Kinser, Hideki Matsuyama, Sebastian Munoz, Kevin Na, Joaquin Niemann, Ryan Palmer, Xander Schäufelle, Scottie Scheffler, and Brendon Todd. Rory McIlroy, Tyrell Hatton, and Jim Herman also qualified as a result of the expanded criteria but withdrew from the tournament.

With the 16 players added, this year’s field of 42 is the largest ever in the history of the event. Of the 42 players who will converge on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, 28 finished in the Top 30 of the 2019 FedEx Cup Standings, including eight who are in the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings led by world number one Dustin Johnson.

Dustin Johnson is Betting Favorite

According to online sportsbook Bet365, OGWR number 1 Dustin Johnson is the odds on favorite to win the tournament at +600. Johnson became the 5th no. 1 ranked player in 2020 after winning the TPC Boston event in August and finished the year. This is the first tournament that DJ will be competing in since winning the 2020 Masters.

The dominant win at Augusta was the climax of an all-time stretch that saw the world number 1 pick up seven straight Top 5 finishes including three wins. It was at this point last year when people asked if DJ would ever return to his old form after battling injuries and inconsistent form during the previous two years. However, not only is DJ back but he looks better than ever and that’s why he’s the oddsmakers’ choice to win this weekend at Kapalua.

Defending tournament champion Justin Thomas, who defeated Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele in a playoff last year, is next in the odds board at +650. Thomas was in contention at the 2020 Masters before a sluggish Saturday saw him finish 4th. That was one of his three Top 10 finishes in his last five tournaments. Thomas hasn’t finished outside the Top 12 since finishing 25th at the BMW Championships in August.

World number 2 Jon Rahm is third on the list at +850. He was runner-up at the ZoZo before a 7th place finish at Augusta. Rahm has three Top 10 finishes in the last three years including runner-up in 2018. Bryson DeChambeau is fourth at +1000 after a disappointing finish at the Masters where he was the pre-tournament favorite. Last year’s playoff losers Reed and Schauffele are fifth and sixth at +1100 and +1600, respectively.
