Canada says NHL can have camps but it’s up to provinces about games

On Dec. 31, the Canadian Government issued an exemption to NHL players and team personnel for the 14-day mandatory quarantine period. Canada said national interest in hockey as the reason to issue the exemption.

But the government didn’t go so far as to say that provinces must allow games in home arenas. Canada has left it up to each province to decide if teams can travel to arenas that exist in their territories.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said he believes the league can play games in all seven Canadian markets. The National Hockey League realigned divisions for this season. All seven Canadian teams, the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and Vancouver Canucks, will play in the same division.

By placing all seven north of U.S. squads in the same division, Canada hopes to have a smooth season. Canada and the United States have treated the coronavirus pandemic differently. That may not change once Joe Biden takes off in the U.S. and even then, Biden takes the seat in the Oval Office a week after the start of the season.

NHL will play some games in Lake Tahoe and Vancouver may play some games at home

Right now, Alberta, where Edmonton and Calgary are, have said teams can travel to the Oilers’ and Flames’ arenas. Manitoba, home of the Jets, should soon announce that teams can travel to Winnipeg and play against their home team.

Vancouver, no doubt, will soon be on board. Vancouver has also said that they plan on having outdoor games. Lake Tahoe and the NHL are in talks to also host outdoor games.

Unlike Vancouver where outdoor games could become the norm this season, the open air contests in Lake Tahoe will take place over the span of two days at the Edgewood Resort. The Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins, and Philadelphia Flyers will participate.

The games will happen on February 20 and February 21. No fans will be in attendance. NBC has high hopes for television viewership, though.

Ice flies starting on January 13
