The Villanova Wildcats will hit the road to take on the St. John’s Redstorm in a Wednesday evening matchup of classic Big East programs. The Wildcats are their typical dominant selves this season with an 11-1 record overall and a perfect 6-0 mark in Big East league play.
St. Johns enters the game with an 11-7 record overall and a 5-6 mark in league play. The Redstorm have enjoyed a great deal of success over the last two weeks winning four consecutive games and five of their last six.
The game is scheduled for a 9:00 PM EST tipoff in Queens NY with Villanova laying nine points on the road. The total is set at 152 points.
Villanova is real Wildcat
Villanova continues their full on sprint towards being admitted into the “blue blood” fraternity with yet another stellar season on the brink. The Wildcats are once again the power in a pretty good Big East and should be considered one of the five favorite teams in the entire nation to win the national championship.
Jay Wright’s group is once again led by a fantastic backcourt in Collin Gillespie (15.5 points, 4.7 assists per game) and Justin Moore (13.5 points and 5 rebounds per game) while the frontcourt boasts one of the best big men in the nation in Jeremiah Robinson-Earl who is also posting 15.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Villanova is 8-4 against the spread on the season with an impressive record of 4-0 ATS in their four true road games. The total has gone over in two of their four games on the road. They have struggled recently against the Red Storm however, covering the spread in just one of their last six matchups.
A Storm Brewing in Queens?
Not much was expected of the Red Storm coming into this season but they have been a pleasant surprise in both their record and the product they are putting on the court. Mike Anderson’s style seems to have found a nice home at St. Johns and really works with his current roster.
As stated, the Red Storm have won five of their last six overall but have been good at home all season. St. Johns is a stellar 7-2 straight up at home this season and 6-3 against the spread within the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena.
Anderson’s group is led by a fantastic stable of guards, most notably Julian Champagnie, a 6’8 sopohmore wing that is averaging nearly 20 points per game. Champagnie highlights a quartet of wings and guards on the Red Storm roster that are shooting at least 35.9% from behind the arc. The total has gone over in seven of the Red Storm’s nine games at home this season.
Villanova (-9) at St. Johns Total: 152 points
Bovada has the spread favoring the road Wildcats by nine points after opening as an eight point favorite. The total is currently at 152 points after opening at 153.5 points.
Villanova is the easy pick on the moneyline but given the Red Storm’s ability to shoot the three ball, taking St. Johns at home to cover a near double digit spread just feels correct. It could be worth waiting as the spread is trending in the right direction to bet on the dog. Take the Storm at home to cover!
