College Basketball Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Penn State Nittany Lions – Jan. 27, 2021

The Penn State Nittany Lions will hit the road to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, OH on Wednesday evening. The Nittany Lions have won two consecutive games after losing six of seven games and an 0-5 start to Big Ten league play. Penn State has seemingly turned it around with victories over Northwestern and Rutgers over the last week.

Ohio State has managed to navigate the gauntlet that is the Big Ten, jumping out to a 6-4 record in league play after a 6-0 start to the season. The Buckeyes have been a bit of a conundrum lately, winning true road games against Illinois and Wisconsin while dropping a home game to Purdue.

The game is scheduled for a 7:00 tip-off from the Value Center Arena with the Buckeyes favored at home by 8 points. The total has been set at 147.5 points.

Not the cowardly lions

This Penn State team could have easily folded up their tent after a tough start to the season but have shown some resiliency over the last week defeating two quality Big Ten teams. Neither Rutgers nor Northwestern are playing their best basketball right now but both groups clearly have mor talent than the Nittany Li

Penn State is led by are quartet of juniors in Myreon Jones, Sam Sessoms, Myles Dread, and Izaiah Brockington. None of which are necessarily big name players but all are big time shooters as all four are shooting at least 36.7% from behind the three-point line and all have attempted at least 24 triples on the season.

Penn State falls short on the defensive end. The Nittany Lions are 267th in the nation in opponents effective field goal percentage as a result of being 320th in the nation in opponents two point percentage.

Penn State is 5-6 against both the spread and in the over/under on the season. They are just 1-4 straight up on the season in true road games.

Ohio State is battle tested

The Buckeyes are not flashy this season but they are a solid TEAM in every sense of the word. Duane Washington Jr. may not be a big name star but he is a big time player and one heck of a shooter. E.J. Liddell receives none of the praise that he should be receiving but he is just another in a long line of undersized Buckeye centers that have prospered in recent years.

There are no “names” on this roster but this team is experienced, well coached, and most of all efficient on offense. The Buckeyes are currently fifth in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency while being 20th best in the nation in offensive turnover percentage.

The Buckeyes are a respectable 9-6-1 against the spread on the season and are 5-3 ATS at home. The total has gone under in five of their eight games.

Penn State at Ohio State (-8) – Total: 147.5 points

Bovada has the spread favoring Ohio State at home by 8 points with the total set at 147.5 points. The spread has grown by a half point since the opening.

The Pick

Ohio State is decent in defense of the three-point, holding opponents to under 33% on the season. Both teams are fairly similar in rebound prowess but E.J. Liddell should be able to do some serious work against this Nittany Lions’ front line. Take the Buckeyes to cover.
